by Mary Budinger

Holistic, natural medicine tends to overlook what is probably the number one source of the body’s toxins – the mouth. The infectious mechanism was initially documented by Dr. Weston A. Price, chairman of the Research Section of the American Dental Association from 1914-1923. History tells us the ADA, however, wanted to promote root canals as a new service and never moved forward with Dr. Price’s well documented research.

Some biological dentists have studied Dr. Price’s work, including Dr. Andrew Landerman of Sebastopol, California. He finds that Lyme and many other chronic diseases are fed by the unique bacteria that develop in root canals and where teeth have been extracted. Dr. Landerman granted us an interview:

MB: Do you see a lot of people with Lyme disease?

AL: I probably have a high proportion of people who are chronically ill. And a high proportion of people who have chronic illness have Lyme.

MB: How do you determine that?

AL: Some people of course come with the diagnosis. In others, I see Lyme in their symptoms. They may have swollen joints and other chronic conditions that are suggestive of Lyme. It is not the same with everyone. It depends upon their weak spot. Where they have a weak link, Lyme will affect that area. It is my experience and that of many others like me, that Lyme at this point in time is not a pathogen that can be eliminated. Rather we must seek to manage it holistically.

MB: Are Lyme bacteria in the teeth?

AL: Not in the enamel, but in the dentin and tubules. Every tooth has some three miles of tiny tubules that spirochetes love to occupy. Antibiotics, even the extended courses that some chronic Lyme patients use, do not get into these tubules. Lyme gravitates toward some teeth. It is my experience that Lyme gravitates especially to the upper and lower centrals, and to the upper and lower first molars. That’s eight teeth.

MB: How do you test the teeth to determine where the spirochetes are hiding?

AL: I devised a method of percussion, a slight tapping of the tooth to give it a tiny shock. I use an electrodermal screening device to measure how the tooth responds. When you see a pattern of low or high current flow, that tells me the tooth is underperforming or overperforming. When the energy level is abnormal, that can indicate Lyme. I have not seen any amount of herbs or antibiotics get these teeth to change their readings for the better.

MB: Can you get rid of the Lyme in the mouth then?

AL: Mostly. It took me almost 15 years to figure out how to test for it in the teeth and how to devise a homeopathic remedy to address it. Teeth breathe. Healthy teeth push fluids out; that is the way they keep bacteria and such out just as skin keeps harmful things out. But with stressed teeth, the flow reverses and fluids go into the Lyme. I don’t think you can ever get rid of Lyme completely. We just have to learn to live with it. The homeopathic remedies I formulated will eliminate most of the Lyme and its co-infections from the teeth. I find that if there is too much Lyme in a person’s mouth, cavitations do not heal unless we address the Lyme first. Energy transference of homeopathy is not like a chemical transference. When a tooth is treated, regardless of whether it has a crown, the tooth seems to respond.

MB: You are one of a mere handful of dentists in the country who uses electrodermal testing, why?

AL: The American Dental Association (ADA) does not yet acknowledge electrodermal screening. I am in the midst of a 10-year, FDA-approved study on the energetic relationship of teeth to degenerative disease as monitored by electrodermal screening. I have about 500 patients in the study. It is crucial to recognize that each tooth is connected via meridians to the organs of the body, and they are all connected energetically. For example, many people with heart conditions will be found to have a chronic infection at the site of their wisdom teeth – the third molars. Certain molars are connected to the heart meridian and when those teeth are stressed with chronic infection, the heart is stressed. Dr. Joseph Issels of Germany wrote that many cancer patients got well, for example, when root canals and other infections of the oral cavity were removed. I find that almost 100 percent of women with breast cancer have a chronically affected upper first molar. Likewise, reproductive organs are tied into the upper centrals, male and female. My approach is based upon the Meridian Theory from Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and The Focal Theory of Infection.

Both homeopathy and Rife frequencies work energetically with Lyme; they are just different sides of the same coin. Both are effective. The difference is that for homeopathy to work optimally, you have to remove as many impediments to proper immune function as you can before using it – such as removal of dead teeth and metal fillings of all sorts, and cleaning up chronic infections in the jawbone. Rife works by generating a frequency specific to Lyme and aiming that at the body to kill the bacteria. Like homeopathy, Rife generators may or may not produce healing crisis. That seems to depend on individual reactions. Neither one will totally eliminate the various forms of Lyme bacteria, but they help manage the disease.

MB: What is the Focal Theory of Infection?

AL: A focal infection is a local infection that expands to incorporate the whole quadrant, then the whole side of the mouth and eventually can cross the midline to incorporate the other side. Basically, the theory says the oral cavity is able to generate particularly nasty toxins that poison the body when you have had a root canal or a tooth extracted. Most dentists still do not understand the Focal Theory; it was studied more in Europe than here. Dr. Weston Price’s great contribution was the discovery that focal infection bacteria are polymorphic, meaning they mutate and adapt and multiply like rabbits in the three miles of dentin tubules that emanate from every tooth. The bacteria become smaller and anaerobic – they can now live without oxygen. They also become more virulent, and their toxins more toxic. Root canals and old extractions are common focal infection sites.

When you have a root canal, a dead tooth is left in the mouth. The dead tooth lacks a blood supply to its interior. Antibiotics circulating in the bloodstream have no way to penetrate this dead tissue. Over time, the material packed inside the dead tooth shrinks a bit. Now bacteria come in and morph. The tooth has both bacteria and toxins as a result of being dead for so many years and these toxins are infiltrating into the bloodstream.

In extraction sites, the healing may not take place correctly. If the healing is incorrect, the space can fill in with fatty tissue, dead bone, improper bone, or it can fill in with infected material. All of these processes are wrong and the organ associated with that extraction site will always show this improper healing. The remedy is to clean out the socket, debride it, and remove the ligament that holds the tooth in as well as the dense bony lining of the socket. The other important factor is cleaning up the quadrant (at least) of the mouth where the extraction was performed – cleaning up all metal and any other extraction sites. This is the best way to assure proper healing from extractions.

Toxins from focal site infections are highly virulent and they tend to go to the organ associated with the meridian upon which that tooth lies. Over time, the toxins’ assault will change the genetics of the organ. However, it has been found that upon proper extraction of a dead tooth and proper treatment of an extraction site, the organ will return to its normal genetics. Bob Jones, an engineer, recently did substantial genetic testing which demonstrated the ability of organs to right themselves.

MB: Are tonsils also focal infection sites?

AL: They can be. Tonsils are basically nodules of lymph tissue. Removing tonsils should be a solution of last resort. Tonsils are part of the immune system. Tonsils are a network of guard posts to infection because the body needs to protect the brain. There are valves in the veins that prevent blood from flowing backward. In the head there are no valves, so blood can flow in any direction and an infection in the brain would be disastrous. The tonsils, when functioning properly, prevent infections from entering the brain. There are four tonsils on each side of the head plus the pair we can readily see at the back of the mouth. They are prone to recurring infections because of allergies and other factors in the body. With multiple infections comes scarring of the tissue. Hence when this has occurred, the tonsils need to be dealt with as scars need to be dealt with.

MB: Tell us how scars interfere with the body’s energy.

AL: If scars are present, they act as an energetic block, much the same way a dead tooth does. And there are various ways to neutralize scars. A scar is not merely something on the outside of the skin – it is the skin. The energy flow of the meridians goes right under the surface of the skin so where there are scars, they can act as a major block to energy flow. There are various other energetic blocks, but teeth, the tonsils, and scars are the major ones. When healing energetically, all three areas are very important to deal with. The stronger the energetic system, the better you can handle outside factors like genetically modified food and environmental chemicals. Often with Lyme, it is said that you need a strong immune system to keep the Lyme under control. That is true. But you also need a strong energetic system and often that is overlooked.

MB: Can you tell us about one of the Lyme patients in your FDA-approved study?

AL: Sure, let’s call her “Julie.” Her history was one of a normal birth, normal delivery, normal first 6 months of development. But then she began to have pronounced joint pains, mobility problems, rashes, and her deciduous teeth – her baby teeth – showed pronounced malformation and discoloration. Julie’s parents took her to a prestigious California medical facility where they were unable to make a diagnosis. She was given pain medication and anti-inflammatories. This went on for 6 or 8 months with no apparent relief of the symptoms. When I first saw Julie, she was 18 months old. Her deciduous enamel was misshapen and reddish in color. This suggested there was a deep underlying condition that probably would cause the same things to occur in her permanent teeth. I used electrodermal screening and determined she had what looked like borellia burgdorferi – the main spirochete that causes Lyme disease. She tested positive for some co-infections, but Lyme was the bigger factor. I made homeopathic remedies for this and we also used natural anti-inflammatory remedies. Within a week, the pain subsided dramatically. The swelling decreased. About one month later, the parents reported that the symptoms had disappeared. It is too early to tell, of course, but there is a every reason to believe her adult teeth will erupt normally and be free of the red stains and changes in morphology that came with the baby teeth. When I saw Julie, I realized both parents had Lyme. Lyme can be transmitted through the placenta.

MB: How much of a role do vaccinations play with children with Lyme?

AL: In general, vaccines lower one’s immune competency and most would impede immune function where Lyme is concerned – allow it to get an easier foothold. A vaccine does not boost immunity. It gives us a template to recognize a specific protein when it enters the body and to be able to attack that protein and render it harmless to the body. Vaccinations should not be done until about 2 1/2 years of age, the point at which all the baby teeth have erupted. It is then that humans have a fully functional, competent immune system and can better handle the introduction of the complex foreign proteins introduced in the form of vaccines. That is not to say they can handle the mercury and other toxins added for stability. We have to create a culture where people realize drugs are not made to maintain healthy, happy lives. The integrity of the terrain is the major factor. Louis Pasteur, remembered for developing vaccines, reversed himself on his deathbed. He said, “The pathogen is nothing, terrain is everything.” If you want a healthy terrain for children, then pre-conception health becomes critical because we are seeing more and more that degenerative changes in kids are transferred from the parents. You see teeth malformations in some children. That says something is going on with the DNA. It has been demonstrated, for example, that there are genetic changes along pathways where there are root canals. Where pathways have been interfered with, the genetic changes for worse. But when corrected, the genetic change goes back to the normal pathway. ”Smart conception” means you clean up the energetics of the body first.

MB: What about mercury fillings?

AL: Mercury is about the most active of metals. The higher the temperature, the more it is released, poisoning the system. It is tough to rid the body of chronic diseases when poison constantly leeches from the mouth. Many people have crowns with an underlying layer of nickel, a very toxic metal. Unfortunately, dental schools are not much help right now. They do not teach Chinese medicine and they still consider amalgam (50% mercury filling) a usable material, when even the FDA now requires warning labels on amalgam packaging. Sometimes people tell me they got worse after they had mercury fillings taken out. I know the wrong material was used in that person’s mouth. You really have to test energetically for what to use for crowns or bridges – restorations. The material I like the best is cubit zirconium, a cousin of what you find in the false diamond. It is energetically different and has been consistently good for restorations. Zirconium is a metal that looks like clear glass. When you make an oxide of it, the negative aspects of the metal disappear. It loses it’s crystalline aspect and becomes more acceptable to the body.

I always felt the internet would help humanity learn how to live better, naturally. As more consumers demand metal-free dentistry, this will create the change in the profession. When I started 35 years ago, I had to talk like a Dutch uncle to get people to remove mercury fillings and root canals – it was tough. Now people are getting more informed. As patients demand change, the young dentists will have to respond. The dilemma, though, is that when they get out of school, young dentists are in debt. To take on a whole new challenge, to change your profession, is a very arduous task. They need the support of the patients.

MB: Would you say something about your own experience with Lyme?

AL: Many people in my part of the country do not understand the Sierra Foothills and the coastal range in which they live is full of ticks. Many people are bitten and never know it. They don’t understand that Lyme disease is sexually transmissible, and is passed through breast milk as well. I got sick because I had teeth extracted. Root canals, as well as improper extractions, weaken your immune competency. In my case, I had two front teeth and one lateral incisor killed by trauma. Subsequent root canals left me compromised. When I was bitten by a tick, I contracted Lyme. I have every reason to believe that had these teeth been properly addressed, my immune function would have been sufficient to withstand the Lyme onslaught, because peple who exhibit healthy immune function generally do not suffer from the worse aspects of Lyme. Nobody in my family has lyme disease – mother, father, sister, etc. I was the only one with bad teeth as well as the only one to have had my tonsils removed unnecessarily. I believe this heavily compromised my immune system.

When I got bitten, I had the textbook bull’s eye rash. In my opinion, those who see a rash are those who have a stronger immune system. The rash is the body’s attempt to defeat the bacteria at the site. Then as the rash expands, that is a sign the body is losing the battle. Eventually, the rash dissipates and is gone. Then you can assume the Lyme has gone latent.

I still struggle with Lyme. But I don’t encourage limiting anyone’s life. I hunt and fish less than I used to, but that’s age, not fear. I love the outdoors and it is such a valuable part of my life, I would not choose to limit that. Lyme can be treated successfully initially with antibiotics or homeopathy – if it is done immediately. But most people, like my patient Julie, don’t know what they have until it is too late for conventional treatment to produce a result.

To completely sterilize the entire inside of a tooth as part of the Root Canal procedure may will be impossible. When a dentist removes the bulk of the nerve from the root canal, he cannot treat the countless tubules with the dead nerve tissue that remains. This dead nerve tissue is often infected and remains in teeth that have root canal therapy. The dentist removes about an inch of infected nerve from the tooth, but all of these untreated and possibly infected tubules remain in the tooth.

Drilling causes trauma and inflammation in tooth nerve and bone. This leads to high fluid pressure in hard tissue which cannot expand, choking off oxygen and blood flow, leading to pain or death of nerve and bone. Drilling also causes cracking of the crystalline enamel leading to decay and future dentistry. Normal teeth cleaning cuts and ruptures the immune membrane leading to infection inside the gum tissue, which spreads throughout the body.

This infection is the threat that Dr. Weston Price found could challenge one’s immune system and contaminate one’s body to the point of causing illness. The dentist could clean and fill the main root canal but the dentist cannot treat about 3 millions of nerve fibrils microscopic tubules. With toxic contamination going through the body of the tooth from the nerve in the root canal to the surface of the tooth, the toxins escape from the tooth into one’s body.

By Dr. Mercola – www.Mercola.com

Many people have had questions about root canals so I thought it would be wise to repost this article. It was an interview with Dr. George Meinig, who was dentist and leader in teaching people about the dangers of root canals. He wrote the book Root Canal Cover Up.

Because I first became aware of this information in the early ’90s I was able to avoid having any root canals. I elected to have three teeth extracted and now have two bridges to replace those teeth.

At the time that was my best option, as I believe that metal implants should be avoided. However in the last few years non-reactive metal implants made from zirconium have become available and that is what I would use now if I had to have an alternative to a root canal.

Why I Encourage You to Think Twice Before Getting a Root Canal

Please don’t let your dentist mislead you that a root canal is your only option, or that it is entirely safe.

Teeth are similar to other organ systems in your body in that they also require a blood supply, lymphatic and venous drainage, and nervous innervations. Root canals, however, are dead teeth, and these dead teeth typically become one of, if not the worst, sources of chronic bacterial toxicity in your body.

If your kidney, liver or any other organ in your body dies, it will have to be removed so that bacteria and necrosis will not set in and kill you … but teeth are commonly left dead in your body.

Teeth have roots with main canals and thousands of side canals, and contained in those side canals are miles of nerves. When dentists perform a root canal, they remove the nerve from the main canals; however they do not have access to the microscopic side canals, which have dead nerves left behind in those spaces.

Anaerobic bacteria, which do not require oxygen to survive, thrive in these side canals and excrete toxicity from digesting necrotic tissue that leads to chronic infection. Blood supply and lymphatics that surround those dead teeth drains this toxicity and allows it to spread throughout your body. This toxicity will invade all organ systems and can lead to a plethora of diseases such as autoimmune diseases, cancers, musculoskeletal diseases, irritable bowel diseases, and depression to name just a few.

Even antibiotics won’t help in these cases, because the bacteria are protected inside of your dead tooth.

It appears that the longer root canal-treated teeth stay in your body, the more your immune system becomes compromised.

Seek Out a Biological Dentist Who is Aware of Root Canal Dangers

If your dentist is not actively engaged in continuing education, and is not open to alternative, toxin-free forms of dentistry, there’s a good chance he or she is not aware of the risks of — and alternatives to — root canals. A biological dentist will be able to provide you with a more comprehensive, holistic solution for your teeth that will not harm your health.

Knowledgeable biological dentists can be hard to come by, so start your search by asking a friend, relative or neighbor who knows of one. If that fails you can contact several good natural health food stores in your area and ask a number of the employees or even the owner. The following links can also help you to find a biological dentist:

An Interview with George Meinig, D.D.S.

Dr. Meinig brings an interesting perspective to expose the latent dangers of root canal therapy.

Dr. Mening is particularly well qualified to comment on this topic as 60 years ago he was one of the founders of the American Association of Endodontists (root canal specialists)!

So he’s filled his share of root canals — and when he wasn’t filling canals himself, he was teaching the technique to dentists across the country at weekend seminars and clinics.

After he retired he decided to read all 1,174 pages of the detailed research of Dr. Weston Price, (D.D.S). Dr. Meinig was startled and shocked as he found a valid documentation of systemic illnesses resulting from latent infections lingering in filled roots.

After reviewing Dr. Price’s materials he wrote “Root Canal Cover Up.”

Please explain what the problem is with root canal therapy.

GM: First, let me note that my book is based on Dr. Weston Price’s 25 years of careful, impeccable research. He led a 60-man team of researchers whose findings — suppressed until now rank right up there with the greatest medical discoveries of all time. This is not the usual medical story of a prolonged search for the difficult-to-find causative agent of some devastating disease.

Rather, it’s the story of how a “cast of millions” (of bacteria) become entrenched inside the structure of teeth and end up causing the largest number of diseases ever traced to a single source.

What diseases? Can you give us some examples?

GM: Yes, a high percentage of chronic degenerative diseases can originate from root filled teeth. The most frequent were heart and circulatory diseases and he found 16 different causative agents for these.

The next most common diseases were those of the joints, arthritis and rheumatism. In third place — but almost tied for second — were diseases of the brain and nervous system. After that, any disease you can name might (and in some cases has) come from root filled teeth.

Let me tell you about the research itself. Dr. Price undertook his investigations in 1900. He continued until 1925, and published his work in two volumes in 1923. In 1915 the National Dental Association (which changed its name a few years later to The American Dental Association) was so impressed with his work that they appointed Dr. Price their first Research Director.

His Advisory Board read like a Who’s Who in medicine and dentistry for that era. They represented the fields of bacteriology, pathology, rheumatology, surgery, chemistry, and cardiology.

At one point in his writings Dr. Price made this observation: “Dr. Frank Billings (M.D.), probably more than any other American internist, is due credit for the early recognition of the importance of streptococcal focal infections in systemic involvements.”

What’s really unfortunate here is that very valuable information was covered up and totally buried some 70 years ago by a minority group of autocratic doctors who just didn’t believe or couldn’t grasp – the focal infection theory.

What is the “focal infection” theory?

GM: This states that germs from a central focal infection — such as your teeth, teeth roots, inflamed gum tissues, or maybe tonsils — metastasize to hearts, eyes, lungs, kidneys, or other organs, glands and tissues, establishing new areas of the same infection.

Hardly theory any more, this has been proven and demonstrated many times over. It’s 100 percent accepted today. But it was revolutionary thinking during World War I days, and the early 1920′s!

Today, both patients and physicians have been “brain washed” to think that infections are less serious because we now have antibiotics. Well, yes and no. In the case of root-filled teeth, the no longer-living tooth lacks a blood supply to its interior. So circulating antibiotics don’t faze the bacteria living there because they can’t get at them.

You’re assuming that ALL root-filled teeth harbor bacteria and/or other infective agents?

GM: Yes. No matter what material or technique is used — and this is just as true today — the root filling shrinks minutely, perhaps microscopically. Further and this is key — the bulk of solid appearing teeth, called the dentin, actually consists of miles of tiny tubules.

Microscopic organisms lurking in the maze of tubules simply migrate into the interior of the tooth and set up housekeeping. A filled root seems to be a favorite spot to start a new colony.

One of the things that makes this difficult to understand is that large, relatively harmless bacteria common to the mouth, change and adapt to new conditions. They shrink in size to fit the cramped quarters and even learn how to exist (and thrive!) on very little food. Those that need oxygen mutate and become able to get along without it.

In the process of adaptation these formerly friendly “normal” organisms become pathogenic (capable of producing disease) and more virulent (stronger) and they produce much more potent toxins.

Today’s bacteriologists are confirming the discoveries of the Price team of bacteriologists. Both isolated in root canals the same strains of streptococcus, staphylococcus and spirochetes.

Is everyone who has ever had a root canal filled made ill by it?

GM: No. We believe now that every root canal filling does leak and bacteria do invade the structure. But the variable factor is the strength of the person’s immune system.

Some healthy people are able to control the germs that escape from their teeth into other areas of the body. We think this happens because their immune system lymphocytes (white blood cells) and other disease fighters aren’t constantly compromised by other ailments. In other words, they are able to prevent those new colonies from taking hold in other tissues throughout the body.

But over time, most people with root filled teeth do seem to develop some kinds of systemic symptoms they didn’t have before.

It’s really difficult to grasp that bacteria are imbedded deep in the structure of seemingly hard, solid-looking teeth.

GM: I know. Physicians and dentists have that same problem, too. You really have to visualize the tooth structure — all of those microscopic tubules running through the dentin. In a healthy tooth, those tubules transport a fluid that carries nourishment to the inside. For perspective, if the tubules of a front single-root tooth, were stretched out on the ground they’d stretch for three miles!

A root filled tooth no longer has any fluid circulating through it, but the maze of tubules remains. The anaerobic bacteria that live there seem remarkably safe from antibiotics. The bacteria can migrate out into surrounding tissue where they can “hitch hike” to other locations in the body via the bloodstream.

The new location can be any organ or gland or tissue, and the new colony will be the next focus of infection in a body plagued by recurrent or chronic infections.

All of the “building up” done to try to enhance the patient’s ability to fight infections – to strengthen their immune system – is only a holding action. Many patients won’t be well until the source of infection – the root canal tooth – is removed.

I don’t doubt what you’re saying, but can you tell us more about how Dr. Price could be sure that arthritis or other systemic conditions and illnesses really originated in the teeth — or in a single tooth?

GM: Yes. Many investigations start with the researcher just being curious about something – and then being scientifically careful enough to discover an answer, and then prove it’s so, many times over. Dr. Price’s first case is very well documented. He removed an infected tooth from a woman who suffered from severe arthritis.

As soon as he finished with the patient, he implanted the tooth beneath the skin of a healthy rabbit. Within 48 hours the rabbit was crippled with arthritis!

Further, once the tooth was removed the patient’s arthritis improved dramatically. This clearly suggested that the presence of the infected tooth was a causative agent for both that patient’s and the rabbit’s – arthritis.

Here’s the actual story of that first patient from Dr. Meinig’s book:

“(Dr. Price) had a sense that, even when (root canal therapy) appeared successful, teeth containing root fillings remained infected. That thought kept prying on his mind, haunting him each time a patient consulted him for relief from some severe debilitating disease for which the medical profession could find no answer.

Then one day while treating a woman who had been confined to a wheelchair for six years from severe arthritis, he recalled how bacterial cultures were taken from patients who were ill and then inoculated into animals in an effort to reproduce the disease and test the effectiveness of drugs on the disease.

With this thought in mind, although her (root filled) tooth looked fine, he advised this arthritic patient, to have it extracted. He told her he was going to find out what it was about this root filled tooth that was responsible for her suffering.

“All dentists know that sometimes arthritis and other illnesses clear up if bad teeth are extracted. However, in this case, all of her teeth appeared in satisfactory condition and the one containing this root canal filling showed no evidence or symptoms of infection. Besides, it looked normal on x-ray pictures.

“Immediately after Dr. Price extracted the tooth he dismissed the patient and embedded her tooth under the skin of a rabbit. In two days the rabbit developed the same kind of crippling arthritis as the patient – and in ten days it died.

“..The patient made a successful recovery after the tooth’s removal! She could then walk without a cane and could even do fine needlework again. That success led Dr. Price to advise other patients, afflicted with a wide variety of treatment defying illnesses, to have any root filled teeth out.”

In the years that followed, he repeated this procedure many hundreds of times. He later implanted only a portion of the tooth to see if that produced the same results. It did. He then dried the tooth, ground it into powder and injected a tiny bit into several rabbits. Same results, this time producing the same symptoms in multiple animals.

Dr. Price eventually grew cultures of the bacteria and injected them into the animals. Then he went a step further. He put the solution containing the bacteria through a filter small enough to catch the bacteria. So when he injected the resulting liquid it was free of any infecting bacteria. Did the test animals develop the illness? Yes.

The only explanation was that the liquid had to contain toxins from the bacteria, and the toxins were also capable of causing disease.

Dr. Price became curious about which was the more potent infective agent, the bacteria or the toxin. He repeated that last experiment, injecting half the animals with the toxin-containing liquid and half of them with the bacteria from the filter. Both groups became ill, but the group injected with the toxins got sicker and died sooner than the bacteria injected animals.”]

That’s amazing. Did the rabbits always develop the same disease the patient had?

GM: Mostly, yes. If the patient had heart disease the rabbit got heart disease. If the patient had kidney disease the rabbit got kidney disease, and so on. Only occasionally did a rabbit develop a different disease — and then the pathology would be quite similar, in a different location.

If extraction proves necessary for anyone reading this, do you want to summarize what’s special about the extraction technique?

GM: Just pulling the tooth is not enough when removal proves necessary. Dr. Price found bacteria in the tissues and bone just adjacent to the tooth’s root. So we now recommend slow-speed drilling with a burr, to remove one millimeter of the entire bony socket.

The purpose is to remove the periodontal ligament (which is always infected with toxins produced by streptococcus bacteria living in the dentin tubules) and the first millimeter of bone that lines the socket (which is usually infected).

There’s a whole protocol involved, including irrigating with sterile saline to assure removal of the contaminated bone chips, and treating the socket to stimulate and encourage infection-free healing. I describe the procedure in detail, step by step, in my book [pages 185 and 186].

Perhaps we should back up and talk about oral health — to PREVENT needing an extraction. Caries or inflamed gums seem much more common than root canals. Do they pose any threat?

GM: Yes, they absolutely do. But let me point out that we can’t talk about oral health apart from total health. The problem is that patients and dentists alike haven’t come around to seeing that dental caries reflect systemic — meaning “whole body” — illness.

Dentists have learned to restore teeth so expertly that both they and their patients have come to regard tooth decay as a trivial matter. It isn’t.

Small cavities too often become big cavities. Big cavities too often lead to further destruction and the eventual need for root canal treatment.

Then talk to us about prevention.

GM: The only scientific way to prevent tooth decay is through diet and nutrition. Dr. Ralph Steinman did some outstanding, landmark research at Loma Linda University. He injected a glucose solution into mice — into their bodies, so the glucose didn’t even touch their teeth. Then he observed the teeth for any changes. What he found was truly astonishing.

The glucose reversed the normal flow of fluid in the dentin tubules, resulting in all of the test animals developing severe tooth decay! Dr. Steinman demonstrated dramatically what I said a minute ago: Dental caries reflect systemic illness.

Let’s take a closer look to see how this might happen. Once a tooth gets infected and the cavity gets into the nerve and blood vessels, bacteria find their way into those tiny tubules of the dentin. Then no matter what we do by way of treatment, we’re never going to completely eradicate the bacteria hiding in the miles of tubules.

In time the bacteria can migrate through lateral canals into the surrounding bony socket that supports the tooth. Now the host not only has a cavity in a tooth, plus an underlying infection of supporting tissue to deal with, but the bacteria also exude potent systemic toxins.

These toxins circulate throughout the body triggering activity by the immune system — and probably causing the host to feel less well.

This host response can vary from just dragging around and feeling less energetic, to overt illness — of almost any kind.

Certainly, such a person will be more vulnerable to whatever “bugs” are going around, because his/her body is already under constant challenge and the immune system continues to be “turned on” by either the infective agent or its toxins — or both.

What a fascinating concept. Can you tell us more about the protective nutrition you mentioned?

GM: Yes. Dr. Price traveled all over the world doing his research on primitive peoples who still lived in their native ways. He found fourteen cultural pockets scattered all over the globe where the natives had no access to “civilization” – and ate no refined foods.

Dr. Price studied their diets carefully. He found they varied greatly, but the one thing they had in common was that they ate whole, unrefined foods. With absolutely no access to tooth brushes, floss, fluoridated water or toothpaste, the primitive peoples studied were almost 100% free of tooth decay.

Further — and not unrelated — they were also almost 100% free of all the degenerative diseases we suffer — problems with the heart, lungs, kidneys, liver, joints, skin (allergies), and the whole gamut of illnesses that plague Mankind. No one food proved to be magic as a preventive food. I believe we can thrive best by eating a wide variety of whole foods.

Amazing. So by “diet and nutrition” for oral (and total) health you meant eating a pretty basic diet of whole foods?

GM: Exactly. And no sugar or white flour. These are (and always have been) the first culprits. Tragically, when the primitives were introduced to sugar and white flour their superior level of health deteriorated rapidly. This has been demonstrated time and again.

During the last 60 or more years we have added in increasing amounts, highly refined and fabricated cereals and boxed mixes of all kinds, soft drinks, refined vegetable oils and a whole host of other foodless “foods.”

It is also during those same years that we as a nation have installed more and more root canal fillings — and degenerative diseases have become rampant. I believe — and Dr. Price certainly proved to my satisfaction — that these simultaneous factors are NOT coincidences.

I certainly understand what you are saying. But I’m still a little shocked to talk with a dentist who doesn’t stress oral hygiene.

GM: Well, I’m not against oral hygiene. Of course, hygiene practices are preventive, and help minimize the destructive effect of our “civilized,” refined diet. But the real issue is still diet. The natives Dr. Price tracked down and studied weren’t free of cavities, inflamed gums, and degenerative diseases because they had better tooth brushes!

It’s so easy to lose sight of the significance of what Dr. Price discovered. We tend to sweep it under the rug — we’d actually prefer to hear that if we would just brush better, longer, or more often, we too could be free of dental problems.

Certainly, part of the purpose of my book is to stimulate dental research into finding a way to sterilize dentin tubules. Only then can dentists really learn to save teeth for a lifetime.

But the bottom line remains: A primitive diet of whole unrefined foods is the only thing that has been found to actually prevent both tooth decay and degenerative diseases.

The number one concern of a biological dentist is the well being of each patient. A good biological dentist will see health as a state of vigor, of wholeness, not just the absence of illness.

Although a dentist can neither diagnose nor treat medical conditions, it is essential that you find a dentist who is aware of the relationship between dental health and your health in general and who can be an effective part of your team of health care providers.

That’s why it is so important to seek out a competent biological dentist.

Maximizing Oral Health and Wellness

To maximize oral health and overall health issues – such as nutritional support, detoxification, the structural alignment of the jaw and TMJ prevention – diet and lifestyle changes may be addressed.

There is a heavy emphasis on educating patients about the best preventative care methods available.

Biological dentists are also at the forefront of developing new equipment and techniques to improve patient comfort and safety during corrective and restorative treatments, including new bio-compatible and longer lasting dental materials.

A Biological dentist will address long-term health issues by recommending the removal of toxic dental materials such as mercury amalgam fillings and by working to eliminate chronic infections in the mouth.

These chronic infections can include cavitations in the jaw-bone and infections from prior root canal procedures.

When dealing with any oral health need, a good biological dentist will choose the least invasive and most effective treatment available, working to avoid any unnecessary structural changes in the mouth that could cause future complications.

Research is showing us that these things are now possible by taking better care of your oral health. Unfortunately, research is also showing us that you may be risking your health and developing serious illnesses if you are not taking good care of your teeth and gums.

Each year, the medical research community continues to collect evidence of the deadly effects of improper and incomplete care for your teeth and gums.

In the field of biological dentistry, also called health-centered or holistic dentistry, there are thousands of reports, and solid research, of physical and emotional ailments being relieved through proper treatment.

It may be surprising to discover how many ailments can be relieved, in whole or in part, through biological dentistry – and that these ailments seem totally unrelated to the mouth!

After more than 40 years of research and observation, Dr. Reinhard (a well-known German physician) reported that almost 80% of all illness are related to problems in the mouth.

Other researchers have established conclusive links between poor oral health, toxic dental materialsand diseases such as Alzheimer’s, heart disease and more.

You see, the human body is a complex network of interrelated systems. Poor health in any one of these systems will be reflected throughout the whole network of systems.

So, while it may not be literally true that illness in the mouth will always cause illness in other parts of the body, the mouth, gums and the teeth will contribute to and reflect the health of your entire body.

The major difference between biological and traditional dentists is the philosophy that guides them in the practice of their profession.

A biological dentist takes into consideration the cause-and-effect relationship between a patient’s oral health and the health of the rest of the body.

In contrast, a traditional dentist tends to focus on the more mechanically oriented tasks of treating symptoms and repairing structures as problems arise, instead of looking for root causes.

For example; when treating dental decay, like a cavity, a traditional dental practitioner will mechanically remove the decay and restore the tooth with a filling and consider the treatment complete. In a biological dental practice, the dentist will remove decayed material and then restore the tooth with an appropriate biocompatible material.

After restoration of the tooth, a biological practitioner will then evaluate the patient for any systemic imbalances (i.e. biochemical or hormonal imbalances) or toxicity that may be contributing to the patient’s susceptibility to tooth decay, so it can be prevented in the future.

When periodontal disease is present, the traditional practice is to remove debris from the teeth and provide oral hygiene instruction, or use surgical procedures for advanced disease. In a biological practice the removal of debris occurs, but it is not as important as improving the biological terrain and reducing the patient’s susceptibility to disease.

By improving the body’s ability to break down and eliminate the microbes through improved wellness, good hygiene practices and the use of supplements, herbs and homeopathic medicines, the patient can avoid a constant cycle of disease progression and treatment.

Traditional dental practitioners have generally approached orthodontic treatment with a focus on doing whatever was necessary to produce straight teeth, even if this meant tooth extraction and the use of headgear that can distort the cranium. Such treatment failed to consider the underlying cranial distortions that can show up as cross-bites, deep-bites and overbites.

A biological practitioner, on the other hand, begins orthodontic treatment by evaluating the patient for cranial-skeletal disorders. By correcting any underlying cranial-skeletal disorder first, the natural structure and health of the patient’s mouth are improved, the teeth can be straightened with less trauma to the patient and the teeth are more likely to hold their corrected positions for a lifetime.

In summary. The guiding philosophies of biological dentistry are:
1. ” First do no harm” (Hippocrates)
2. The health of the mouth and the body are one and the same.

By seeking out and working to understand the root cause of illness, the biological practitioner helps the patient achieve health stability, wellness and a reduced need for avoidable, unnecessary and costly treatment.

There are problems with root canal therapy you should know about.

Most of the information found here is based on George Meinig’s book Root Canal Cover-Up. Dr. George Meinig is an authority on root canals. He brings a most interesting perspective to the possible dangers of root canal therapy: 50 years ago Dr. Meinig was one of the founders of the American Association of Endodontists (root canal specialists). So he has filled his share of root canals.

When he wasn’t filling root canals himself, Dr. Meinig was teaching the technique to dentists across the United States at weekend clinics and seminars. A few years ago, after having recently retired, Dr. Meinig decided to read all 1100+ pages of the detailed research of Dr. Weston Price, (D.D.S.), a pioneer in the field of root canal therapy.

Dr. Weston Price’s careful, impeccable research took place over a 25 year period during the early 1900′s. Dr. Price published his work in 2 volumes in 1923. In 1915, the National Dental Association (which changed its name a few years later to “The American Dental Association”) was so impressed with Dr. Price’s work that they appointed him their first Research Director.

Dr. Meinig was shocked and startled by Dr. Price’s published research. In Dr. Weston Price’s research was valid documentation of systemic illnesses resulting from latent infections lingering in filled roots.

So exactly what is the problem with root canal therapy?

Dr. Meinig’s book, which is based on the 25 years of research done by Dr. Weston Price, discusses how root canals can cause BACTERIA to become entrenched inside the structure of teeth and end up causing the largest number of diseases ever traced to a single source.

According to Dr. Meinig, a high percentage of chronic degenerative diseases can originate from root canals. The most frequent were circulatory and heart diseases. The next most common diseases were those of the joins and arthritis.

Again according to Dr. Meinig, there was an unfortunate turn of events whereby very valuable information was buried and covered up some 70 years ago by a small group of autocratic doctors who just didn’t believe – or couldn’t grasp – the “focal infection theory”.

Root canals and the focal infection theory

What is the “focal infection” theory? The “focal infection” theory states that germs from a central focal infection – such as teeth roots, teeth, inflamed gum tissues or perhaps tonsils, metastasize to the heart, the eyes, the kidneys, lungs or other organs/tissues, establishing the same infection in new areas.

Revolutionary thinking in the early 1920′s, this theory has been demonstrated and proven many times over. However, today, both patients and doctors have been “brain washed” into believing that infections are less serious because we now have antibiotics. That is not the case. In the case of root-filled teeth, the no-longer-living tooth lacks a blood supply flowing to its interior. So circulating antibiotics can not impact the bacteria living there because they can not get at them.

In his research, Dr. Price did hundreds of experiments, which Dr. Meinig discusses in his book “Root Canal Cover-Up”. In one of those experiments, for example, Dr. Price removed an infected tooth from a woman who suffered from severe arthritis. As soon as he finished with the patient, he implanted the tooth beneath the skin of a healthy rabbit. Within 48 hours the rabbit was crippled with arthritis.

Dr. Meinig claims that all root-filled teeth harbor some bacteria and/or other infective agents. No matter what technique or material is used, the root-filling shrinks microscopically. Another point is key: the bulk of the solid-appearing teeth, called the “dentin”, is not solid and actually consists of miles of tiny “tubules”.

In a healthy tooth, those “tubules” transport a fluid which carries nourishment to the inside of the tooth. To give you an idea, it is said that if the tubules of a front tooth were stretched out, they would be 3 miles long… A root-filled tooth no longer has any fluid circulating through it, but the maze of tubules remains. The anaerobic bacteria that live there seem remarkably safe from antibiotics.

Microscopic organisms hiding in this maze of “tubules” simply migrate into the interior of the tooth and set up housekeeping. A filled root seems to be a favorite place to start a new colony.

Another thing we need to understand is that large, relatively harmless bacteria common in the mouth, change and adapt to the new conditions. They shrink in size to fit the cramped quarters and even learn how to survive on very little food.

Those organisms that need oxygen mutate and become able to survive without the presence of oxygen. Though this process of adaptation, these formerly friendly/normal organisms become pathogenic – capable of producing disease – and more virulent and they produce much more potent toxins.

Today’s bacteriologists are confirming the discoveries of Dr. Price’s team of bacteriologists. They isolated in root canals the same strains of “streptococcus”, “staphylococcus” and “spirochetes”.

Not everyone who has ever had a root canal filled is made sick by it. It is believe now that every root canal filling does leak and bacteria do invade its structure. However the variable factor is the vitality of the person’s immune system. Some people in good health are able to control the organisms which escape from their teeth into other areas of their body.

It is believed that this happens because their immune system’s white blood cells and other immune system fighters are not constantly compromised by other diseases. In other words, their immune system is capable of preventing those new colonies from taking hold in other tissues throughout the body. But over time, most people with root canals do seem to develop some kinds of systemic symptoms which they did not have before.

The “focal infection” theory says that the bacteria can migrate out into surrounding tissues where they can travel to other locations in the body via the bloodstream. The new location can be any organ or tissue, and the new colony will be a new source of infection in a body plagued by chronic or recurrent infections.

Root canal or extraction?

Just extracting the tooth is not enough when removal proves necessary. In his research, Dr. Price found bacteria in the tissues and bone just adjacent to the tooth’s root. So what is now recommended is slow-speed drilling with a burr, to remove 1 millimeter of the entire bony socket.

If the tooth is dead and it is impossible to revive it, then it would be best to have a root canal with a material called “Biocalex”. “Biocalex” eliminates many of the organisms and is far less likely to cause complication in the short run. If this fails and one is seriously debilitated, it maybe necessary to extract the tooth. Check with a biological dentist for this. Many biological dentists have alternative methods, such as infra-red lasers, which can save the tooth in about 1/4 of the cases.

Root canal is a procedure in which dentists remove diseased or injured pulp that runs from a tooth’s interior down its root. Pulp contains blood vessels and nerves and provides nutrients to the tooth. Infection in pulp can progress to an extremely painful abscess. In the past, a tooth with a diseased root had to be extracted, but dentists can now remove the pulp, seal off the cavity (root canal) to protect it and save the tooth.

The idea that root canals pose a risk to general health comes from research suggesting that bacteria and viruses left behind at the tip of the root canal might persist and multiply in the space around the tooth. Other research cited by holistic dentists (including my own dentist, Steve Swidler) focuses on people with chronic health concerns. These dentists think that root canal procedures may raise disease risks.

As for the idea that root canal is associated with breast cancer and other serious conditions, Dr. Swidler subscribes to the theory that every tooth is in a different body meridian and is related to different organs, bones and joints. This doesn’t mean that root canal on a tooth in the same meridian as a breast can cause cancer. But Dr. Swidler says that if he had a patient with breast cancer and an infected first or second molar on the same circuit as the affected breast, he would urge her to have the tooth removed.

To sum up, Dr. Swidler and other holistic dentists who subscribe to these theories believe that losing a tooth is sometimes better for your health than have a root canal. Mainstream dentists and the American Dental Association do not share those views and maintain that the procedure is safe. That’s my personal belief, as well. Given

Boston management consultant Will R. didn’t have to go to the doctor to know he had cancer. He knew he had cancer when he started bleeding through his rectum in 2002. He was in his late 50s when this happened.

A medical examination confirmed Will’s strong suspicion: it was colorectal cancer. Doctors found a two-centimeter tumor.

Article from How to Cure Almost Any Cancer at Home for $5.15 a Day” By Bill Henderson with Andrew Scholberg

But cancer was just one of Will’s many health problems. He also suffered from:

Frequent, splitting headaches

Severe sleep apnea and heavy snoring, causing him to wake up in the middle of the night as if he were about to choke

Intense pain in the roof of his mouth

Fatigue

Fungus on his feet, back, and abdomen

Dimming eyesight

Night sweats so bad the sheets were soaking wet

Twitching when he dozed off or fell asleep

Will didn’t want to go under the knife. He wanted to try alternative therapies to get rid of his cancer. But the surgeon scared him onto the operating table by telling him, “You’ll die without surgery.” He had the operation in October of 2002.

Of course, doctors practically insisted that Will take radiation and chemotherapy. But he refused because he believed alternative treatments would be more effective.

Will became better educated about cancer than his oncologist. He read more than a dozen books about cancer, and two key facts popped out at him:

To beat cancer, you have to make your body as healthy as possible by natural methods. To reach this state of health, it’s necessary to get rid of other diseases and infections in your body.

You can’t be healthy if you have dead teeth such as root canal teeth, infected teeth, or infected cavitations in the jaw.

Root canals are safe, right? WRONG!

In 2003 a biological dentist examined Will and found several severe problems. (Biological dentists are mavericks who regard root canals, mercury and fluoride as harmful.) Will’s two root canals were infected with staph and strep. The dentist confirmed these infections by laboratory analysis.

But Will’s jaw had other problems, too. During his 20s when his wisdom teeth were extracted, the dentist failed to remove all of the connective tissues. As a result, the sockets didn’t heal properly but became infected with staph and strep. This kind of dental problem following a crude extraction of a tooth is called a cavitation.

Because of his cavitations, Will had serious necrosis of the jaw — in other words, gangrene!

And the trouble with these toxic pockets in his jaw is that the staph and strep were spreading throughout Will’s body, causing all kinds of health ailments. Will’s root canals and the improper extraction of his wisdom teeth had caused his colorectal cancer.

Not only did the biological dentist fix Will’s jaw, but he also replaced Will’s mercury fillings with biologically compatible fillings.

As you know, mercury is one of the most toxic substances known to man: a teaspoon of mercury can poison a whole lake. Yet the dental establishment still claims that mercury is a wonderful substance for filling cavities.

The American Dental Association (ADA) has been peddling the “mercury is safe” message to the public for decades, and it’s too stubborn to admit it was wrong. It’s in denial about mercury, just as it’s in denial about root canals.

After the biological dentist fixed Will’s teeth, his health made a 180-degree turnaround:

His cancer went into remission.

His frequent headaches went away.

His intense pain in the roof of his mouth went away.

His fatigue went away.

His fungus went away.

His heavy night sweats stopped.

His nighttime twitching stopped.

His sleep apnea went away.

His heavy snoring stopped.

He stopped waking up in a panic with a choking feeling.

His eyesight improved.

Will’s oncologist was so impressed with his recovery from cancer that he told him, “You’re the longest-living person I have who hasn’t done conventional therapy. Your life expectancy was six months. There’s no one like you that we know about!”

The main thing that helped Will, without a doubt, was getting his root canal teeth removed, getting his infected cavitations cleaned out, and having his mercury fillings replaced with a biologically compatible material.

“But are all root canals bad?”

You might be wondering whether root canals are always bad. Yes, they are. They’re not safe. If someone with a root canal seems to be in good health, you can be sure that the person’s immune system is strong enough to fight off the toxicity from the root canal. But when the same person encounters severe stress, such as a job loss, divorce, or the death of a loved one, the immune system may become weak. When the body can no longer fight off the toxicity from a root canal, a disease such as cancer can break out.

As for wisdom tooth extractions, the dentist often fails to remove all of the connective tissue from the socket. This is what leads to cavitations. Cavitations and root canals cause necrosis of the jaw: gangrene. And these dental problems contribute to perhaps half of the cancer cases in America.

“Fish story” explains what causes cancer

Here’s a “fish story” that explains the cancer disaster in America.

Half the catfish in the Anacostia River in Washington, D.C., have cancerous tumors in their livers. The Anacostia River is little more than a toxic waste dump. Located within the city limits, this small, slow-moving river catches all of the nasty runoff from the city. It’s actually a wonder that any fish live in it at all.

The catfish in the Anacostia River eliminate toxins and poisons through their livers. Normally, this wouldn’t be a problem, but there’s so much pollution that the catfish are taking in poisons faster than their livers can process and eliminate them.

So how would you “cure” an Anacostia River catfish of its liver tumors? With surgery? With toxic chemotherapy? With a liver transplant? Even if these treatments were feasible, what good would they do if we just put the “cured” catfish back into the filthy river?

It’s a fact that people with cancer — like the Anacostia River catfish — have too much toxicity in their bodies. It’s necessary to avoid taking in more toxins and to get rid of the toxicity that’s already inside.

Using a healthy, organic eating plan helps the body get ride of many poisons. But a healthy diet won’t do anything to fix an infected jawbone or a toxic root canal tooth.

Visualize a wisdom tooth being extracted. If the dentist or oral surgeon fails to remove the connecting ligament or leaves in too much bone, the gum and jaw won’t heal properly. With the tooth missing, anaerobic bacteria can start growing in the hole, and this becomes even more toxic than botulism. This toxicity can get into the bloodstream and cause breast cancer, prostate cancer, and other types of cancer.

In fact, when a woman has cancer in one breast, you’ll often find that the culprit is a root canal on the same side as the cancerous breast!

There can be no longer be any doubt about the connection between root canals and cancer. I’ve had experience with over 3,000 cancer patients. When these cancer patients get their mouths cleaned up, they get well — even if they’ve tried everything else.

Pioneer dentist proved root canal toxicity in 1920s

Early in the 1900s, Dr. Weston Price, a pioneer dentist, discovered and proved that root canals are highly toxic. Dr. Price is considered one of the greatest dentists of all time. He was the head of the research arm of the precursor to the ADA.

Working with 60 other prominent dentists, Dr. Price tried to find a way to do a root canal safely. They worked with hundreds of patients, and tried everything under the sun. And Dr. Price concluded that there’s no way to do it.

Dr. Price found that the toxicity of root canal teeth caused a wide variety of health problems, including rheumatoid arthritis, MS, cancer, glaucoma, diabetes, and so on. And he proved it with a rabbit experiment. This experiment should be famous, but the medical and dental Establishment wants to drop it down the memory hole.

Here’s how the experiment worked: When Dr. Price took a root canal tooth out of a diseased patient’s mouth and implanted it under the skin of a rabbit. The rabbit would quickly develop the same disease.

If the patient had glaucoma, the rabbit got glaucoma. If the patient had arthritis, the rabbit got arthritis. If the patient had cancer, the rabbit got cancer. And so on. This happened hundreds of times.

Dr. Price recommended that dentists immediately stop doing root canals.

But root canals are a good income-producer for dentists. Modern dentists in America do about 40 million root canals a year. No wonder half of all American men and a third of women can expect to eventually get cancer. Each root canal silently seeps poison into the system, often resulting in health problems.
